Alberese is at a short drive from Grosseto off Aurelia road, and it is the treshold of Maremma Natural park. The village was founded by “Opera Nazionale Combattenti” (ex-soldiers). After 1918 these lands were taken from an Austrian nobleman, and thanks to a large number of farmers who came here from Veneto and reclaimed these lands, developed new agriculture techniques, the entire place was transformed into a huge garden. In spite of human presence, the natural paradise of Alberese with its flora and fauna was kept untouched and today a Regional Law and a Park keep on watching over it. Semi-free-range horses and cattle live in open spaces, while in the thick of Uccellina woods there are wild boars and roe-deer. Inside the Park one can find pristine Nature but also ancient ruins, and a trace of human civilization through ages. During prehistorian ages , some caves of the place -- such as that called “ Scoglietto” – were inhabited and they still show the sign of a human presence dating back to the Bronze and Roman age, or, more recently , to Romans (S.Francesca, Le Frasche) and Etruscans (poggio Raso) located alongside Aurelia Road and towards Talamone. In the heart of the Park there is the suggestive Saint Rabano Abbey, dating back to the Middle Ages. Eventually, alongside the coast, there are ancient towers, once used by soldiers to look out against the pirates that came from Northern Africa.
