The beach of Torre Mozza lies just 3 km from the centre of Follonica and is watched over by a striking 16th‑century coastal tower, once a Medici lookout against Saracen raids. Two shaded car parks are located behind the dunes – handy in the shoulder seasons, though they tend to fill up quickly in high summer. The shoreline alternates stretches of free beach with small serviced areas offering parasols, SUP/kayak hire and kiosks.
The setting retains a wild charm: golden dunes, reed beds, juniper and fragrant helichrysum form part of the Sterpaia Coastal Park, renowned for its crystal‑clear water and rare dune orchids. The seabed shelves gently – perfect for families – yet just thirty metres offshore a submerged rocky bar appears, only a metre below the surface. Local lore calls it a remnant of the ancient Via Aurelia; legend or not, mask and snorkel reveal a natural aquarium: octopuses hiding in crevices, bream and sea bass on the hunt, saddled seabream and salema grazing algae.
Snorkellers can follow an easy buoy‑marked trail that runs along the reef for several hundred metres – ideal for underwater photography thanks to exceptional visibility. At sunset the tower’s silhouette cuts a cinematic profile against the glowing sky, a perfect backdrop for memorable shots. In June and September evening tours bring the tower to life with historical re‑enactments and tastings of local produce, while in winter the dunes attract bird‑watchers spotting cattle egrets and cormorants in the nearby wetlands.
